Tesla Roadster vs Model S Plaid vs Rimac Nevera: which is fastest?

Tesla says the new Roadster reaches 60 mph in under a second. The Model S Plaid and the Rimac Nevera R are the cars it has to beat, and unlike the Roadster, you can test both today. Here is how the claims compare, and why the numbers are not quite like for like.

Tesla Roadster vs Model S Plaid vs Rimac Nevera: which is fastest?

When Tesla unveiled the second-generation Roadster on 15 October 2026, the number that travelled furthest was its claimed 0-60 mph time: under one second for the Thrust trim. Within a day, "tesla roadster vs plaid" and "tesla roadster vs rimac nevera" were among the top Google suggestions for the car.

The comparison is natural. The Model S Plaid is Tesla's fastest car on sale, and the Rimac Nevera, in its latest Nevera R form, is the electric hypercar that has set the pace for everyone else. The catch is that only two of these three cars can be bought and timed today.

The short version

  • On paper, the Roadster wins. Tesla claims under one second to 60 mph for the Thrust trim, against about 1.74 seconds for the Nevera R and 1.99 seconds for the Plaid.
  • On proof, it doesn't yet. The Roadster's numbers are Tesla's own and untested. The Plaid and the Nevera have been timed by independent outlets for years.
  • The comparison isn't like for like. The Roadster's quickest runs use cold-gas thrusters. The other two are limited by how much grip their tyres have.
  • The price gap is enormous. The Plaid costs about $100,000. The Nevera R starts at about $2.5 million. The Roadster's price is unknown, with reservations of $50,000 and $250,000.

Is the Tesla Roadster faster than the Model S Plaid?

Tesla says yes, by a wide margin: under one second to 60 mph for the Roadster's Thrust trim against 1.99 seconds for the Plaid, and a top speed above 230 mph against the Plaid's 200 mph.

Two things to bear in mind.

First, the Plaid's figure uses a "rollout". Tesla's 1.99 seconds is measured the way American drag strips time cars, which leaves out the first foot of movement. Measured from a true standstill, the Plaid is slower, and independent tests have produced a range of results depending on surface and conditions. When you compare numbers from different sources, check whether rollout is included.

Second, the Roadster's quickest time uses thrusters. A normal car accelerates only as hard as its tyres can grip. The Roadster's cold-gas thrusters push the car directly, the way a rocket does, so the tyres are no longer the limit. That is why the claimed time is so low, and also why it is not really the same contest. The Performance trim, which has no thrusters, has not been given its own 0-60 figure.

Is the Tesla Roadster faster than the Rimac Nevera?

Again, Tesla's claims say yes. The Nevera R reaches 60 mph in 1.74 seconds and, with 2,107 horsepower, is one of the most powerful road cars ever built. The original Nevera's acceleration records were set under independent timing, and both cars have been tested by the motoring press.

The honest answer for now is that the Nevera R is the fastest of the three that anyone has actually measured. If the Roadster's numbers survive independent testing in 2028, it will take that title, at least for straight-line acceleration with thrusters. Lap times on a track, where braking, cornering and heat management matter, are a different question that nobody can answer yet.

Which one makes sense?

These cars barely compete for the same buyer.

  • Model S Plaid: a five-seat family saloon that happens to be absurdly quick. It is the only one of the three you could use every day, carry passengers in, and buy this week. If you are in the UAE, it is sold through Tesla's local store. See our Pakistan and UAE Tesla price guide for current dirham prices and Pakistan's import taxes.
  • Rimac Nevera R: a collector's hypercar, limited to 40 examples, priced like a house in most cities. It is about engineering and rarity more than practicality.
  • Tesla Roadster: a bet on a car that does not exist in production form yet. The appeal is the thrusters and the spectacle. The risk is the timeline. Read our Roadster guide for the full delay history before you reserve.

What this comparison says about product strategy

Tesla now has three very different kinds of product on one stage: an affordable mass-market car (the Model Y Standard), a fast premium saloon (the Plaid) and a halo car that may sell in small numbers (the Roadster). Musk himself said the Roadster might not move the needle much for revenue.

Halo products earn their keep in attention, not units. The Roadster unveil generated worldwide coverage for the whole Tesla brand at almost no media cost. For a business planning a product range, the question is the same at any scale: which product pays the bills, which one wins the customers, and which one makes people talk about you. Our growth strategy consulting work helps companies answer it, and our automotive sector notes look at how those choices play out in the car market.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest electric car in 2026?

Of the cars that have been independently tested, the Rimac Nevera R is among the quickest, at 1.74 seconds to 60 mph. Tesla claims the new Roadster will beat it with under one second, but that figure has not been tested and the car will not be built until 2028.

Tesla Roadster vs Model S Plaid: which is faster?

Tesla claims the Roadster is much faster: under one second to 60 mph and more than 230 mph, against 1.99 seconds and up to 200 mph for the Plaid. The Plaid's figures have been tested by independent outlets. The Roadster's have not.

Is the Tesla Roadster faster than a Bugatti?

Tesla's claimed 0-60 time is quicker than any Bugatti, but it uses thrusters, so it is not a fair comparison with a tyre-driven car. Top speed is a different matter: several hypercars have gone faster than the Roadster's claimed 230 mph.

How much more expensive is the Rimac Nevera than a Tesla?

The Nevera R starts at about $2.5 million, roughly 25 times the price of a Model S Plaid. The Roadster's price has not been announced.
