While the Roadster took the headlines in October 2026, the Tesla most businesses will actually consider buying is the Model Y, and since late 2025 it comes in a cheaper Standard version alongside the Premium. "Tesla model y standard vs premium" has become one of the most common searches about the car.
For a private buyer, the choice is mostly about taste and budget. For a business, it is a cost decision with a few traps in it: range in winter, charging at the depot, what drivers will tolerate and what the car is worth when you sell it. This guide sets out the differences and a way to decide.
The short version
- Price: the Model Y Standard RWD started at $39,990 in the US and the Premium RWD at $45,990 (August to October 2026), both before about $2,640 of destination and order fees.
- Range: 321 miles for the Standard against 357 miles for the Premium RWD, on Tesla's US estimates.
- What you give up: a slower 0-60 time, smaller centre screen, no rear screen, no ventilated seats, fewer speakers, simpler suspension, no light bars, and a lower peak charging rate.
- The US federal EV tax credit ended on 30 September 2025, so neither version gets it. Check state and utility incentives instead.
- For most fleet roles, the Standard is enough. The Premium earns its extra cost when cars do long days, carry clients, or will be sold on to private buyers.

Prices and the Standard's range are from Kelley Blue Book's coverage of the Standard launch and Tesla's US site. Feature differences follow reviews published between August and October 2026. Reported figures for the Standard's battery size and peak charging rate vary between sources, so confirm them on Tesla's Model Y page for the car you are actually ordering.
How much range does a business car really need?
Start from the job, not the brochure.
Work out the worst normal day. Take the longest day a car does in a typical month, not the average day. A sales rep who averages 80 miles but does a 220-mile client run twice a month needs a car sized for 220.
Then take a margin off the rated range. Rated range is measured in standard conditions. Motorway speeds, heavy air conditioning in a Gulf summer, cold weather, roof loads and an ageing battery all reduce it. A common fleet rule of thumb is to plan on using no more than 70 to 80% of the rated figure on a working day. On that basis the Standard gives about 225 to 255 usable miles, and the Premium about 250 to 285.
If your worst normal day fits inside the Standard's usable range with room to spare, the extra 36 miles of the Premium is comfort, not capability.
What does charging cost a business?
Two things matter more than the car's peak charging rate.
Where the car charges. Cars that charge overnight at a depot or at home rarely use fast chargers, so the Standard's lower peak DC rate hardly matters. Cars that top up mid-shift on public fast chargers will spend a little longer plugged in with the Standard, and that time is paid driver time.
When the depot charges. If you install chargers at your premises, the way you schedule them can matter more than the electricity used. Plugging in ten cars at the start of the working day can set a new peak and push up your demand charges for the month. We explain how demand charges work, and how to avoid a peak you did not need, in what rising US electricity costs mean for your business. The same logic applies to commercial tariffs in the UAE and Pakistan.
Are there tax credits for a Tesla in 2026?
Not federally, in the United States. The $7,500 clean vehicle credit for new EVs, and the commercial clean vehicle credit that businesses used for fleet purchases, ended for vehicles acquired after 30 September 2025, as set out by the IRS. Some states and utilities still offer rebates or charger incentives, and business vehicles may qualify for normal depreciation. Ask your accountant how depreciation applies to your purchase before choosing between the two trims on price alone.
Outside the US, the picture differs:
- UAE: Tesla sells directly, and the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive was listed from about AED 189,990 in October 2026, according to YallaMotor. Confirm current trims and prices on Tesla's UAE site.
- Pakistan: there is no official Tesla sales channel. Both Model Y trims are well below the $75,000 threshold for the new Special Excise Duty on imported EVs, which we explain in our Tesla price in Pakistan and the UAE guide.
Total cost of ownership: a simple comparison
For a fleet, the purchase price is only the first line. Here is a framework rather than a forecast, because your mileage, electricity tariff and resale market decide the answer.
| Cost line | Standard vs Premium | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Standard about $6,000 cheaper | Fleet or volume discounts, financing rates |
| Energy | Similar per mile | Your depot tariff and when cars charge |
| Driver time charging | Standard slightly longer on fast chargers | How often cars fast-charge during shifts |
| Insurance | Usually a little lower for the Standard | Quotes for your actual drivers and use |
| Maintenance | Similar; the Standard has simpler suspension | Tyre wear at your mileage |
| Resale value | Premium likely holds more in absolute terms | Whether you sell to private buyers or trade in |
| Driver satisfaction | Premium more comfortable on long days | Who drives, how long, and whether it is a perk |
The two lines that most often decide it are driver time and resale. If a car spends long days on the road with a senior salesperson or carries clients, the Premium's comfort and range can pay for themselves. If it is a pool car or a field-service vehicle that does predictable local routes and will be run until it is worn out, the Standard is usually the better use of money.
Which one should your business buy?
Choose the Standard if:
- the car's worst normal day fits inside about 225 miles,
- it charges overnight at the depot or at home,
- it is a pool, delivery, field-service or ride-hail vehicle, and
- you plan to keep it for most of its life.
Choose the Premium if:
- drivers regularly do long days or long motorway runs,
- the car carries clients or senior staff,
- it often fast-charges during the working day, or
- you will sell it after two or three years to a private buyer.
Mixed fleets are common, and sensible: Premiums for the roles that need them, Standards for everything else.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Tesla Model Y Standard and Premium?
The Standard is about $6,000 cheaper and has 36 fewer miles of range (321 against 357 miles for the Premium RWD). It is slower, with a smaller screen, no rear screen, no ventilated seats, a simpler audio system and passive suspension.
Is the Tesla Model Y Standard worth it?
For drivers whose daily mileage fits comfortably inside its range and who charge at home or at a depot, yes. It gives the same basic car and charging network for less money.
What is the range of the Model Y Standard?
Tesla estimates 321 miles in the US. Plan on less in hot or cold weather, at motorway speeds or with a full load.
Can a business claim a tax credit on a Tesla in 2026?
Not the US federal clean vehicle credits, which ended for vehicles acquired after 30 September 2025. Normal business depreciation and some state or utility incentives may still apply.
Is the Model Y Standard available in the UAE and Pakistan?
Tesla sells the Model Y in the UAE through its own stores; check its UAE site for which trims are offered. In Pakistan, Teslas are available only through importers.
