Someone in Gulberg opens Google Maps and types "accountant near me". Someone in DHA searches "best dentist Lahore". Someone in Saddar searches "AC repair near me" while standing in a hot room.
These people are not researching. They are buying, now, within a few kilometres of where they are standing. That is the highest-intent traffic that exists, it is free, and in most Pakistani cities the businesses competing for it are doing so with an unclaimed listing, a wrong phone number and no reviews from the last two years.
This is the most winnable SEO opportunity available to a local business here, and it is mostly an afternoon of unglamorous admin.
The short version
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. It is free and it is the single highest-return marketing action for any business with a physical location or a service area.
- Google ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance. You can change the other two.
- Reviews are the prominence lever, and the only sustainable way to get them is to ask every satisfied customer, systematically. Buying them risks the listing itself.
- Your name, address and phone number must be identical everywhere. Inconsistency is the most common invisible cause of poor local ranking.
- If you serve several cities, you need a real page per city, not one page with a list of city names in the footer.
How local ranking actually works
Google is explicit about the three factors, which is unusual and useful.
Relevance. How well your listing matches what was searched. This is driven by your chosen categories, your services list, your description and what is on your website. A business filed under the wrong primary category is invisible for the term it should own, and this is the single most common misconfiguration we find.
Distance. How far you are from the searcher, or from the place they named. You cannot change this. You can decide which areas are realistic for you to compete in, which is a strategy decision rather than an SEO one.
Prominence. How well known and well regarded the business appears to be. Reviews, mentions of your business elsewhere on the web, links to your site, and general web presence all feed this. Prominence is the slow one, and it is where the durable advantage is built.
What this should change: stop thinking of local ranking as a mystery. Two of the three inputs are things you control directly, and most of your competitors are not touching either.
The Google Business Profile checklist
Work through this once, properly, and you will be ahead of most of your market. Start at Google Business Profile.
- Claim and verify the listing. Unverified profiles do not compete. Verification can take a few days, so start it before anything else.
- Set the primary category with precision. "Dental clinic" not "clinic". "Digital marketing agency" not "advertising agency". The primary category carries far more weight than the secondary ones, so pick it deliberately and add the others underneath.
- Name, address, phone exactly as they appear everywhere else. Not "Ltd" in one place and "Limited" in another. Not a mobile on the listing and a landline on the website.
- Set hours accurately, including holiday hours. Turning up to a closed business is one of the fastest routes to a one-star review.
- Add real photos, and keep adding them. Exterior, interior, team, work in progress, products. Stock photography is obvious and it undermines the trust the listing exists to create.
- Fill the services or products list in full, with descriptions. This is indexed content and almost nobody completes it.
- Write the business description in plain language describing what you do and where. Not a keyword list.
- Add a WhatsApp or call button if that is how your customers contact you. In Pakistan it usually is.
- Turn on messaging only if someone will actually answer it. An unanswered message is worse than no messaging.
- Post updates. Offers, new services, a project you finished. Low effort, and it signals an active business.
Reviews: the part everyone gets wrong
Reviews drive prominence, they drive the click once you rank, and they are the hardest thing for a competitor to copy quickly.
What works: asking every satisfied customer, at the moment they are satisfied, with a direct link to the review form. Not "please review us on Google" on a receipt nobody reads. A message, sent the same day, with a link that takes one tap.
Build it into the process so it happens without anyone remembering: the technician sends it when the job closes, the account manager sends it when the project ships, the system sends it when the order is delivered. This is a small CRM automation and it compounds for years.
Reply to every review, including the bad ones. A calm, specific, non-defensive reply to a complaint is read by every future customer and frequently does more good than the complaint did harm.
What to avoid: buying reviews, incentivising them with discounts, or having staff post them. These are detectable, they are against the terms, and the downside is losing the listing you have been building. The upside is a temporary bump. That is a bad trade for a business that intends to exist in five years.
Name, address and phone consistency
Google cross-references your business details across the web. When the details disagree, confidence drops and so does ranking.
Make a list of every place your business appears: your website, your Business Profile, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, directories, marketplace listings, your invoices, your WhatsApp Business profile. Make them identical. Not similar, identical.
This is boring, it takes an afternoon, and it is one of the most reliable ranking improvements available.
If you serve more than one city
The common approach is one page listing every city you cover. It does not rank, because it gives Google nothing specific about any of them.
The approach that works is a genuine page per city, with content that could only have been written about that city: the areas you cover, the work you have done there, relevant local detail, local contact information. If you cannot write a real page about a city, you probably should not be competing there yet.
| Approach | Ranks | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One page listing all cities | No | Nothing specific about any location |
| Duplicate pages with the city name swapped | No, and risks a penalty | Thin, duplicated content |
| A real page per city with local substance | Yes | Specific, useful, matches local intent |
| A profile plus a real page per city | Best | The two reinforce each other |
The website half
Your listing and your website work together. Three things on the site actually matter for local:
Speed on a mid-range phone. Your customers are searching on mobile, often on a weak connection. If the page takes eight seconds, you lose them regardless of ranking. We covered why this matters more than any network upgrade in 5G in Pakistan, and the fuller treatment is in why your website is slow.
Your address and phone in real text, not inside an image, on every page.
A page for each service you want to rank for. One page trying to rank for twelve services ranks for none.
Both halves are what web development and SEO and digital marketing do together rather than separately.
Measuring it honestly
Three numbers, monthly, and no more:
- Calls and direction requests from the profile. Google reports these. It is the closest thing to revenue in the whole exercise.
- Review count and average rating, tracked as a trend.
- Where you actually rank for your three most valuable local terms, checked from a phone that is not signed into your account.
Rankings alone are vanity. Calls are the number. This is the same distinction we made in KPIs that predict business health.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rank higher on Google Maps in Pakistan?
Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile with a precise primary category, keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere online, collect reviews steadily from real customers, and support it with a fast website that has a real page per service and location.
Is Google Business Profile free in Pakistan?
Yes, it is free to claim, verify and use. The cost is the time to set it up properly and the discipline to keep asking for reviews.
How long does local SEO take to work?
Profile fixes such as categories, hours and details can move results within weeks. Prominence, meaning reviews, mentions and links, builds over months. Anyone promising first position in a fortnight is either lying or planning something that will cost you the listing.
Can I rank in a city where I have no office?
It is much harder, because distance is a ranking factor you cannot influence. If you genuinely serve the area, a service-area business profile plus a substantial page about that city is the legitimate route. Listing a fake address is the fastest way to lose the profile entirely.
Do reviews from friends and family help?
Not reliably, and they carry real risk. Review patterns that look manufactured can cost you the listing. Ask actual customers, systematically, and you will build something a competitor cannot undo.
Where to go next
If you want the listing, the site and the review process set up as one system rather than three separate jobs, that is SEO and digital marketing. If you also run a physical location, retail shop setup covers the in-store half. Or send us your business name and we will tell you what your listing looks like to a customer today.
